Trying things, the blog might act weird

I’m trying few things with the blog so it might act all weird for sometime. I’m very sorry if this causes some inconvenience to any of you readers.

What I’m trying to do, is to put up some kind of system enabling me to blog or tweet via Iridium satellite phone. If you know such system, please drop a comment or send e-mail!

Jaakko – Have you bought the sat phone or are you hiring it ? I am looking at the possibility of buying the Spot connect ( I have the Spot 2 Messenger) for sending SOS or a pre– defined short messages to let my wife know that I am OK when out of normal mobile phone signal. The Spot Connect which has just come onto the UK market ( I don’t know the score in Finland) allows your smart phone to connect with the satellite phone system to send messages, including the opportunity to send messages to Twitter and Facebook. May be a cheaper option

I’m borrowing the sat phone from a friend. I think that the Spot connected is quite limited, mostly because it uses Global Star satellites which are not as sure bet as Iridium satellite network (especially when near the polar regions). But I am really looking forward for the DeLorme InReach which enables sending SMSs via Iridium network with Android based phones. It looks really cool but have to see how the price tags for the services…

Iridium sat phones can send SMS messages to e-mail addresses (and other Iridium phones but not to cell phone numbers or directly to Twitter) this should enable sending a message directly to my blog, but as the address need to be typed in the 160 character message, the problem is the very long e-mail address of the blog so I was thinking about redirecting the messages via some other e-mail service with shorter address. And the thing going on is testing this. Haven’t got it work yet. The problem is that many services send back some sort of confirmation e-mail which naturally doesn’t work with the Iridium phone…

Jaakko, I was only aware of the DeLorme product which is teamed up with the Spot Connect. The InReach with 2 way communication looks the business.
